I thought I would wish everyone a wonderful time through the Halloween and Autumn Festival period. I have always enjoyed this time of year and look forward to it from the time summer ends. I like the pumpkins everywhere, brightening up the place. Some with scary faces and others that are just comical and silly. The winds seem to howl in the night and bring a nip in the air. The leaves blow everywhere coating the ground in stunning colours. They seem to flicker as they flip and tumble across the ground in the gusting winds.
As a child, I always enjoyed trick or treating back on Cape Breton Island. Even though it was a different time, and a different place. But quite often, being a typical Canadian, I spent many Halloweens with a big winter coat over my costume, so it really looked quite pathetic! But this is where we live. Now that my generation has grown up and are now in charge of making the Hollywood movies, most of those 80’s iconic characters are back in full swing: Darth Vader, Batman, Spider-Man, Ninja Turtles, Transformers and so many more.
Then of course the Eighties hit, so it was the horror movie decade that never seemed to be duplicated. From Halloween, Friday the 13th, Hellraiser, Candyman, Nightmare on Elm Street, to The Omen and Child’s Play. It was a fun time to be a teenager, and with every passing year, the horror marathons got longer and longer, until it evolved into a Halloween Horror Fest Week! To this day, I still watch many of them each fall when the Horror Movie Marathons start in October.
By the time I was an adult, there were always parties and events going on at the local bars or pubs. Dances and costume events displaying amazing craftsmanship. To this day I still enjoy them and go to Fan Expo each year in Toronto. There is a significant portion of it dedicated to the horror genre from those days.
Even though I never go to parties or bars anymore, I still like to get out in nature and enjoy the crisp air and blowing leaves. So, to all those who are like me and enjoy this time of year, I hope you have a good one! For those who don’t like it, there is a cute movie from the 80’s called Poltergeist…throw it in and have a laugh!
