Waterloo Wellington Science and Engineering Fair
WEBSITE DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
Project Overview
The Waterloo-Wellington Science and Engineering Fair (WWSEF) was founded back in 1974 to promote excellence in STEM amongst our next generation. It is an annual science fair that showcases the talents of senior elementary and high school students from Waterloo Region, Wellington County, and Upper Grand District School Boards.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, the WWSEF had to cancel its 2020 fair and was looking for ways to pivot to an online environment for 2021. Due to the necessity of creating a virtual fair in 2021, CryoDragon Inc. chose the WWSEF as their 2020 Charitable Partner and worked to donate a brand new website to the charity while updating their branding to reflect their growth and innovation.
The opening slider features their original, revamped logo being assembled in space, where stars can be “connected” as the mouse hovers over a certain area. This interactive background is present throughout the entire website. The intent was to create a fun website that was suitable for youth, taking inspiration from modern design trends that were slightly out of the box – those that didn’t follow straight lines. Wavy curves are seen throughout the site to differentiate between sections, and off-center text and images are used for effect and emphasis in different areas.
The registration portal and virtual fair gateway are accessible through the website and also offer a bunch of features that were donated by CryoDragon Inc. to make the virtual fair as seamless an experience as possible. We believe this partnership was perfect for us due to our scientific background and our passion for giving back to our community.
