Virtual reality (VR) has become increasingly popular with high-profile product releases such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets. This technology places users in simulated environments that feel extremely lifelike, allowing them to experience senses such as sight, touch, hearing and even smell.
As a web and graphic design company, we try and keep up with the latest design trends. And for the longest time, due to the growing popularity of VR, the team at CryoDragon was wondering when a substantial app would be created to paint in 3D or design custom artwork through VR versus the usual VR games. Our questions were answered when the HTC Vive headset went on sale in May.
When the HTC Vive was released, it came with Google’s 3D painting app called Tilt Brush. The Tilt Brush is an incredibly immersive app that allows users to create detailed artwork using different types of paint brushes. You can create layers of art with different depth, and even walk around your art to create more layers and brush strokes in different angles and 3D coordinates. Your finished creation can then be shared as room-scale VR masterpieces or bite-sized animated GIFs.
Since the Tilt Brush app requires users to familiarize themselves with the VR headset controllers, it is a great beginner’s app for those who want to quickly learn how to operate their VR device. Although we haven’t tested this out ourselves, we have read multiple articles and reviews of Google’s Tilt Brush that says that the user interface is extremely friendly and immersive, creating a fun experience for beginner and veteran VR users alike.
With the release of Google’s Tilt Brush, a new era of virtual art has begun. Other VR reality art apps are slowly being released (although with less exposure than the Tilt Brush), and the possibilities are truly endless with such an advancement in VR technology. Take a look at some of the artworks that individuals have made, and next time you want to let go of your creativity, think about using a VR painting application to see what masterpiece you can create!
